Got a question, hope someone can answer... What online casino can you deposit with Discover Card? Looking forward for any answer. My 2nd question... I had thought with the economy slowly turning around, we'd start to see things improving a bit - or least things not getting any worse, but the past two weeks have not been good news at my workplace..

I work for a leading drugstore/pharmacy chain as a supervisor..

In 2007, I was lured away from my previous employer with an offer of a 20% pay increase. I gave my previous employer a chance to match it, and they offered 5%. Three months later, I was given a promotion, and another 12.5% pay increase. Times were good. I was making 35% more per hour than I was with my previous employer. As an added bonus, my location reimburses supervisors for monthly train passes ($59/mo) - so I just use that in lieu of driving...

In late 2008 (after my raise) it was announced that raises would be limited at 2% maximum for annual increases and 5% for promotions (unless being promoted to a salaried position). This change stuck through 2009, and is still in effect now. Many of us were hopeful it would go back to 5% for annual and 12.5% for promotion in 2010 - or at least somewhere better than 2% and 5% - but it doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, especially after the news of the past week..

- Our weekly budget for payroll has been decreased from 950 hours to 800 hours..

- Our store must "decrease" the number of employees enrolled as "full time" from 16 to 10. Full time employees "cost more" than part time employees because they get better benefits..

Despite the terrible fiscal year (our district was down like 4% in sales over 2008), my store was UP in sales by a little over 3% from 2008..

I understand shareholders look at a working mother's health insurance as an "unnecessary expense", and a quick way to save lots of money is to have people working less often, but seriously...?.

The hours we have had to cut have not been "excess" - it's been anything that's not bare minimum. Losing those 150 hours, even just for the first week, have meant shelves have been empty with the product sitting in the back for 2-3 days at a time. There is now a shortage of cashiers, and lines are longer. I worked on New Years Day, my scheduled shift was 7am to 3pm. Upon opening the store, I was apalled. There were zero paper towels and toilet paper on the shelves.

The milk cooler was empty, with plenty in the storage cooler. Potato chips, soda, snacks, detergent... all wiped out. I ended up with seven hand written pages of a "to do list" for the day. I got the shelves full, but didn't get out til 9 pm..

The next day I was greeted with an email from our district manager asking "why the f a supervisor worked a 14 hour shift on a time and a half holiday"..

So - how long can we expect for this crap to continue?..

*shrug* sounds like business as usual in a retail environment. That's why I no longer work in a retail environment..

Granted, not paying (with Discover card) enough hours to keep the shelves stocked is going a bit too far...

RETAIL IS A LEGAL JOB.

(although some would rather be jobless then go that low)..

I worked in a similar environment in the past (rest. mgr) and faced the same.

Type of cuts in hours when we had a bad quarter previously..

I realize the need to cut costs and payroll is always the largest pool of money,.

But why do companies insist on shooting themselves in the foot?.

Leaving shelves unstocked for days at a time is a perfect way to miss sales...

I didn't mean to come across as if retail wasn't a real job or was somehow beneath me..

What I should have said was that my experience in retail (12 years retail management) was that employee hours were the first thing cut whenever things went bad. This never made sense to me as it always resulted in poor employee moral and lower customer satisfaction...which lead to decreased sales...leading to more cuts..

I would go back to retail in a heartbeat if that was what it took to support my family, but that is one rat race I'm happy to be out of for the moment...

It's not the best paying (with Discover card) job, but I made about $34,000 in 2009 - and I have health, dental and vision insurance... as well as profit sharing which comes with a company "dollar for dollar" match of up to 5% of your paycheck. I get reimbursed for public transportation used to get to and from work, so that basically elminates most of my travel expenses...

Your situation is one of the many reasons why I left retail as primary employment. When my life was no longer dependent on suffering through every day under the ever present corporate retail thumb, my life improved immensely..

I now make a little less than you do, and get no benefits besides health and basic vision, but then again I didn't get them anyway and the retail work is solely supplemental income, which has made it a lot easier to swallow. I get some other more bizarre benefits, but nothing better than being free of the retail hell...
