Got a quick question: Monthly Fee for Green Dot Discover Card ? Thanks in advance for any answer. Second question.. Http://abclocal.go.com/wtvg/story?section=...&id=7202517.. |
I'm stumped. I'm not so sure what is the right answer to your question. I'll do some Googling and get back to you if I find an anything. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably can answer it..
Yeah, this won't last long. Shoot, given the high profile it attracted, it may have already been dropped...
JUST DON'T TAKE CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS.
...watch 50% of your business go down the street.. |
I WOULD PICKET THE PLACE IF I LIVED NEAR THERE.
Or. BUY BREAKFAST...LUNCH...and DINNER THERE FOR A WEEK AND FILE A CHARGEBACK ON EVERY SINGLE 4% OVERCHARGE. It would have to be a. LINE ITEM. On the receipt.. |
Like the lottery, the race track or casinos?.
ETA: We have a liquor store by us that only accepts cash or checks. They do have ATM machines so you can get cash on your CC€™s. They have the cheapest prices of anyone. They are the busiest store I know of. CASH is KING!!!. This post has been edited by. Rorer_714. : 06 January 2010 - 04:01 AM.. |
I've done a chargeback on a pizza I had delivered that had a non-disclosed 50 cent Discover credit card surcharge. The bank CSR laughed.
And told me that it would cost the restaurant $20 in fees. Needless to say, I don't order from that place anymore... |
Well, all they really would have to do to be compliant is raise all prices across the board by 4%, then offer a cash discount of 4%...
The correct answer... go across the street to BK's nearest competitor. Watch how fast that little charge goes away, especially if people are walking in, finding out about the fee, and walking out...
As a matter of principle, you bet it is. I don't even eat at BK, but if I did and found out about this I'd drive over to the next competitor..
BK is a major in fast food. We're not talking about a mom and pop specialized deli where I would pay cash if necessary.. But BK just deciding cash is the way to go? No way. It is definitely newsworthy. People will be voting with their feet..... |
TOO BAD MANY DON'T THINK IT IS A BAD THING.
(or don't care). Just like asking for ID with a Discover card or pulling a credit report for non credit products.. |
I remember this old Austrian man refusing to rent me a snowboard last winter unless I paid 4% extra. And NO American Express! (Even though they accepted it..?) My German wasn't so great at the time so I couldn't argue with him, but this stands out in my memory because he was doing the calculations long-hand and had quite the struggle...

Somebody has better news???.

I don't care if small businesses charge a small fee or require minimum amount to use a credit card, but I care when a big fast food chain does it, and I would go to somewhere else...
Why not? They are small businessess! Small businesses do not usually have special contract with card processors like Walmart, Burger King, McD's, etc and they pay higher fees per transactions because of their lower quota compared to medium/big businesses...
Yeah I'm sure Burger King's bottom line is really suffering today..
That's something I've never understood...if you don't want to actually accept the cards, then why advertise that you do? Why go through the hassel of setting up the merchant account? It just seems dishonest...
THEN DON'T TAKE CREDIT CARDS.
Have a. "SMALLER". Customer load.. |
IMHO, it's basically the same mentality that lead to big banks to become too big and out of control. Don't let any one business get too big. Support small and hard working business owners to compete with big businesses, like credit unions instead of the big major banks...
As I've stated before, I will pay cash at a certain special deli. Not because they are mom & pop, but because they go over and beyond any other establishment, and their food is out of this world.
So, I'm willing to pay in cash. There are a few exceptions...but only because the establishment is exceptional, not just because they are small biz. But BK?. There is nothing exceptional about this multi-chain, I can get the same quality food at a dozen other places within a mile. These places rake in higher sales since adopting dc/cc acceptance... |
I remember the first fast food place I saw that took credit cards. I was on a contract in Chicago in April of 2005. It was lunchtime and I was driving around the Bensenville area looking for an ATM so I could pull cash for lunch when I notice that a Taco Bell I was driving past had MC/Visa signs on the doors..
I immediately pulled in. While I was there, I ate quite a bit of Taco Bell since the other fast food places had not yet followed suit.. Like TrevorHere said, if the place is just plain outstanding, I will make arrangements to have cash on hand...but those type of places are few and far between... |
A friendly reminder that this is not Burger King the corporation, but rather a single franchisee with two stores...
A single franchise WILL still make more money than most two small businesses make, otherwise that franchise store will probably have to close it per (typical corporate) franchise contract...
Right, but my reminder was to hopefully head-off people thinking the overall corporation was at fault here when they're not. There are plenty of things to legitimately criticize BK for... inconsistent and questionable food quality one of them... but this isn't one of them...
THE LOCAL.
TACO BELL. HERE INCREASED SALES TWO or THREE FOLD FROM THEIR CASH ONLY DAYS. The first week they put an ad in the newspaper asking for MAJOR HELP. They said they would even take people who could only work two days a week. They were asking. CUSTOMERS. To fill out applications. They made the poor employees work EXTRA LONG SHIFTS. They called people in on their days off. They had lines out the door. THEY NEVER HAD LINES OUT THE DOOR WHEN THEY ONLY TOOK CASH. (not even at lunch rush and dinner time). HERE...THERE IS NO FOOD PLACE (FAST FOOD or SIT DOWN) THAT I KNOW OF THAT DOESN'T TAKE CREDIT CARDS. This post has been edited by. GEORGE. : 06 January 2010 - 03:31 PM.. |

The legend grows..
Eventually they will have kidnapped poor eastern European children and chained them to the tables back in the kitchen. Makin' tacos..... |

Thanks for that reminder about Taco Bell! I have 10 Taco Bell bucks I need to use up before tomorrow. Going to hop on the Subway in a minute to go get my Cheesy Gordita Crunch, Fiesta Potatoes, Mexican Pizza and Taco Supremes!. The good soul that I am I originally had 25 Taco Bell bucks but gave three of the certificates away to the homeless... |
George, please post some proof of your allegation that they increase business 2 or 3 fold by accepting plastic. As it stand I'm calling total and utter BS. Yep, I'm saying YOU LIED..
If you don't like the fee, tell the owner and go somewhere else. That's the beauty of our society, it's a free economy... |
I know of a few that don't take CC's but they are either located in very poor sections of town where the demographics suggest a low percentage of people with credit cards anyway or not very busy at lunchtime..

I would be surprised if thats not true actually. I very very rarely ate at fast food places 5 years ago because I very very rarely had cash on me. Now I eat at them quite often simply because of the convenience factor...
YEP.
I LIED. SHOULD I EXPECT ANYTHING DIFFERENT FROM. THE HATE and BAIT CLUB. I sit there during lunch time and watch more than 3/4 of the customers using plastic. (I sit where I can see the registers and be close to the. PEPSI. Machine). This post has been edited by. GEORGE. : 06 January 2010 - 04:21 PM.. |
Business increase? Sure. Maybe even a significant increase. 2-3 fold? Highly doubtful. Unless there were other parallel factors such as heavy surrounding development, etc...
Since I have not carried cash other than pocket change for more than 10 years it was hard to go to.
TACO BELL. For lunch unless somebody else was paying (with Discover card) in their. CASH ONLY DAYS.. |
How do you know many of them weren't regular customers who previously used cash?..
Really funny how this has turned into another.
THROW CRAP IN GEORGE'S FACE POST.. |
...AND NOW WE RETURN TO OUR REGULARY SCHEDULED PROGRAM ALRADY IN PROGRESS..
Just in case some of you didn€™t read the article, it was about the fact that BK stopped the fees, not that they started the fees. It also stated that they are offering a refund to anyone who brings in their receipt...
The story at the original link in post #1 has been updated. Yesterday it said nothing about the fee being dropped, nor any refunds...
Oh, you're like that one really annoying friend every group has that NEVER has cash on them, eh?.
You know the guy.....the guy that when the check comes makes it a pain in the you-know-what to split the bill because he only has plastic. The guy that can't tip because he doesn't have cash...that guy, right?. The guy that makes the wait in line *that* much lomger because he insists on buying a pack of gum on credit, right?. Yup...every group has THAT GUY.. |
BK.
Is. FAST FOOD. You have 2 choices in payment. CASH or PLASTIC. You charge a fee for plastic and you eliminate. Most. Of that customer base. This post has been edited by. GEORGE. : 06 January 2010 - 04:41 PM.. |
I'm the guy (at the restaurant) who makes it easy on everyone by accepting their cash and paying (with Discover card) with my rewards card...
I've done that before..
Kinda sucks, though, when TWO people in the group only have cards... |
You really oughta try and see if you can work as a consultant for BK to help improve their business model....lol..
Everybody else chips in the CASH (SIT DOWN RESTAURANT)...I use my.
REWARDS. Credit card to PIF. I bank the cash. Only down-side is some forget that they have to pay a tip and tax so I pay more than I should (many more times than not). But I still get rewards. Next time they can cover my lunch at. TACO BELL. (pre Discover card days). This post has been edited by. GEORGE. : 06 January 2010 - 04:51 PM.. |
I'm that guy too. I would much rather make you wait behind me for the 15 seconds it takes me to swipe my card and sign than wait what seems like forever for the woman in front of me to count out the exact change from the coin purse she is trying to find which is buried somewhere deep in her main purse...
<PART IN RED.
YEP I ONLY USE CREDIT CARDS SO I CAN'T FIND ANY CASH. What is the. REWARD STRUCTURE. For this cash stuff???.. |
Isn't cash too expensive to take to the bank? I mean, you have to spend time and gas and make a special trip, and all. You should make them pay extra to compensate you for your gas...
Not true..
All you need to do is show the receipt charging you, say, $10.00 and the Discover card voucher for $10.40. I've done it a number of times and always get the difference refunded.. I've even had the Discover card companies refund the service charge when it was not distinguishable by comparing the receipt and the voucher... |
Yes, because plastic is better..
If I know I need cash I'll get some, but normally carry less than $5... |
I wonder how they would be.
TAXED. On that. 4% RIP-OFF FEE. How did they get the register to charge the. 4% FEE. In the first place. I know. SAMS. Has a. 10% UP-CHARGE FEE. For guests with a coupon now and then.... Our computers only have a. DISCOUNT KEY FOR EMPLOYEES.. |
Same here as well... transactions are very quick using card. Walmart is quick, but McD's has them all beat. Bought a cup of coffee today inside and had to authorize in just a couple seconds..
I usually end up behind this woman you wrote of. However mine is older and has to get out her reading glasses. Then has to dig for her checkbook.... then pen... then she puts her wallet back into her purse, only to find out she has to produce ID on her check so she goes digging again... between the hairspray, brushes, hairnets, prescription bottles, and those orange slice jelly candies..... |
Don't forget the ones that feel the need to update the balance in their check register right there, also...
Funny stuff, lol..
Then again, I've been stuck in line behind the guy on the cell phone arguing with his card issuer about why the card is being denied... |
