My first question is Is it true that for Everything Else..There's Really Discover Card? Thanks for any answer or 2. Another question on my mind: So I'm at a crossroads, could really use some advice from this community. I've had a BofA secured Discover credit card for over a year now, $1000 limit, never been late. I requested they upgrade me to an unsecured card, just got off the phone with them and my request was denied because I have a CO from 2005. It was PIF, but is still on my report. Apparently my unblemished history on the current secured card is not enough to outshine this old CO..

A couple days ago, I requested another secured card from BofA through their website. The only current TL on my CR is my secured BofA card and based on my research here I should have at least 2 - 3 open TL's in good standing. This is probably why my score hasn't moved much in the past 12 months. So I apply for another secured card, get the hard inquiry on my CR, called BofA to find out application status and the rep told me they only allow 1 secured card per customer and that my application is going to be declined..

2 questions:.

1) What are my chances of having BofA remove the hard inquiry they recently made in reference to this application? There is no information on their website saying a customer can only have 1 secured card, so I didn't know. If I had known, I wouldn't have applied..

2) If you agree that I should have another open revolving TL on my CR to help increase my score, what should I apply for? Can I get a secured card without a hard inquiry? That would be the best option for me I think..

Advice? My wife and I really want to buy a home this Spring and with my scores stuck in the 660/670 range I'm afraid we're going to get killed on the APR...

Especially one that has mortgage products. Patelco was nice for me..

Do you have a lot of inquiries on your report? The score effect of a few is minor. As said above, use credit pulls, know what is pulling, and try to keep them balanced between the reports. If you are going for mortgage in spring, don't add too many, but you need more than one for sure. You can probably find some unsecured lines. Even a store card like target or walmart or macys is going to help in the long run...

With scores in that range you should qualify for a few unsecured cards! That is a really good score IMO. I would do the HSBC preselector and maybe find a couple CUs to get into...GL..

Thanks for the info folks. I will look into local credit unions..

Jtoast - what do you mean "is it out of SOL yet"? Isn't the SOL for CR accounts 7 years? I'm expecting this account to remain until 2012. Am I missing something?.

Thanks!..

Jtoast was probably referencing the SOL for legal action, not for credit reporting. The SOL for legal action would be the amount of time since DOFD that a debt can be collected through the courts and this time varies from state to state. You are right about the SOL for credit reporting being 7 years (for just about everything)..

If the CO is indeed paid, then the SOL wouldn't matter anymore, since you've already paid it. Try disputing it with the CRAs, it might go away...
