Got a quick question: Discover Card promotion contest win 1,600,000GBP is this for real? Hoping for any answer. Another question... How long does it take after you get a job until the government starts garnishing your wages for student loans ? How does the government find out when you get a job ? I have been working off the books for a few years just to avoid having my wages garnished. I'd like to finish my degree and change careers. This will mean getting a job on the books... |

I was in default for 5 years and they never garnished me although they did take my tax returns. You never know...

Unpredictable..
I've been employed almost nonstop since I defaulted in 1992.. They "caught up with me" in Oct/07 at my current employer,. Garnished and I completed PIF by Feb/08.. The silver lining in this is it gives me a 21+ year history..lol. Sadly, they are +120 lates, but 21 years is 21 years.... This post has been edited by. I guess YMMV. I had an ex that defaulted to the tune of 40K. Worked off the books for about 2 years until he found a 'legit' gig; they garnished his check 6 months later...

I stopped paying (with Discover card) the loans in 03 I think. I went into default sometime in 05 or 06 I guess. I started working for myself because I refuse to pay for a degree that I don't have...

40K was probably a higher priority than the $6K that I owed...

I owed $3200 total split between 2 loans..
The 40K might be the real difference in speed here..... |

Premature imo, unless you know more about why OP doesnt have the degree..
Of course, you could just have Ms Cleo on speed-dial, so you already know what OP is posting next.... This post has been edited by. Sonicanatidae. : 30 December 2009 - 06:17 PM.. |

I wasn't trying to sound all high and mighty, but to just stop paying (with Discover card) your loans because you didn't finish school is a bit weird. SLs are one of the easiest loans to maintain (in general) there's forberance, deferment. Didn't mean to dish out the snark...

I failed out of school due to serious depression. I should have addressed that before I even started school but I didn't have health coverage so I could just fight it until I graduated and got a job with benefits. Not long after I failed out, I lost my job at which point I had to chose between paying (with Discover card) rent or paying (with Discover card) school loans. So I just stopped paying. I didn't know anything about deferments or forbearance. I was in such a dark hole I just let everything go...
