My 1st question is: Discover Card is selling a dedicated film/slide scanner for $150. Is it a good value? Looking forward for any answer or 2. Another question on my mind: I had an amex that I defaulted on 10-13 years ago. In the first few years after the account went bad, I got offers for the optima/oasis programs, but couldn€™t take advantage of them, mainly b/c amex had inflated the amount owed by a ridiculous sum (think 5-6x the original amount owed) + at the time, I wasn€™t in a financial position to pay them anything. Both Amex + the CA (NCO?) dropped off my reports a few years ago after sticking around for 7.5 years.. |

I'm stumped. I'm not so sure what is the answer. I'll do some investigation and get back to you if I discover an decent answer. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably could give you help..

Even though the debt is outside of SOL Amex is still hoping to collect. As they see your credit improve you will likely continue to receive Oasis offers. If you pay them in full they will let you back "in". Otherwise, don't waste the inquiry as Amex never forgets...

JOIN THE CLUB.
No accounts left after I was. AMEXED. They do it because they "CAN". You could send them a letter asking them why.... I never did...not worth my time. On the. UP-SIDE. It helps with "B" if you do that (and if it is on EQ or TU)...you didn't say what one or ones.. |

Many have been happy with.
AMEX OASIS. .... But there have been some who were. DENIED. After they followed all their rules and requirements.. |
|
Yes, I know some people have been happy- + it would be nice to get back in w/amex if they would agree to backdate the account. I€™ve also heard of people paying (with Discover card) them + then once they€™re done w/the optima/oasis program, they get amexed, so I€™m not sure the risk is worth it since they€™re not on my reports + can€™t sue me...

I know some people who amex €œforgot about,€? but I€™m not seeking any new credit at this time (just started rebuilding in 07-08, so letting things age). Plus I€™ve heard some bad stories about people paying (with Discover card) amex to €œget back in€? + then amex yanks the ccs right back. I have no problems paying (with Discover card) them what I owed, but I have no paper record showing the last accurate balance + I€™m not sure amex has the records any longer since the balance they€™re claiming is what the CA inflated by 5-6x. Just seems weird to pull after 10+ years..

|
It€™s on EX + TU. EX is frozen till the cows come home + b* is not possible there anyway, so who cares. TU only has 1 inq which should be b* soon (+ doesn€™t matter anyway b/c I€™m not seeking new credit). Just seems wonky for amex to snoop around after all this time. Maybe they wanna suck me back in + €œgeorge me€?? Just joking george..

I get the same creepy soft inq. from Amex. Had an account with them back in the early 90s. I'm also getting other stealth hits from companies like RJM Aquisitions..
Not sure why these folks keep checking up... but it's their wasted time, not mine.. |
|
Not only after ten years, but also after twenty five years. I have seen them soft up to 10 times per month..
The problem is when they screw up and pull a hard inquiry. Although the federal statutes are silent on this, the FTC seems to think that they do not have permissible purposes for a hard pull once the TL has fallen off your credit report. I have seen success in challenging hard inquiries of this nature.. I would not NOT accept an AmEx Oasis offer specifically because there are no guarantees that they don't nuke your new card for whatever purposes their little minds can come up with each week. Besides, if you really do need an AmEx there are many banks that now issue AmEx cards without also getting yourself involved in AmEx's generally moronic crap... |
|
Sadly, I have to agree. We used to recommend the OASIS program, but lately, AmEx has been known to change their mind even after granting the new card. So, if someone just wants to pay them, fine, but don't expect a new "relationship" with them - no one has a relationship with them that can be counted on any more...

Well, speaking of amex, they sent me a love letter today. basically the letter says pay us 60% of the inflated amount we say you owe + we'll release you from any liability. it also says something to the effect of this debt must be paid off before amex will give you another Discover credit card or before you can get an amex through your employer, so I guess i'm 1 of the "lucky" 1s stuck on the "amex blacklists thee for f-o-r-e-v-e-r list (mind you the original debt was <$1k). NO mention of any type of oasis program (or offer of amex cc) for me paying (with Discover card) them. so outside of being unable to get a corporate or personal amex from amex (not essential to my life anytime soon + when my ficos improve more, I can get 1 from USAA or somewhere else) + outside of me paying (with Discover card) off an old debt (though the settlement offer still inflates the original debt amount by 2-3x), I don't really see the point of paying (with Discover card) off amex. funny thing is that had they made me an oasis offer like this 1-3 years ago when I first started rebuilding- AND had they offered to backdate my acct, i'd have jumped on it.

If you call them they will offer you Oasis but you have to pay 100% of what they claim you owe. If you want back in with them that is your only option. The 60% settlement offer for an account outside the SOL is a suckers bet and it will not get you back in with Amex...

They must be trying to book some additional revenue for 2009....
They pull softs on my Experian several times a month and have been doing so for 5 years now. I too got a love letter from them on Monday: Pay 40% of your balance, blah, blah, blah. My offers alternate between 40-60% off my outstanding balance charged off in 1998 and Oasis. I sent a letter CMRR yesterday basically reiterating that I do not accept the offer, I don't admit any responsibility for the debt, and that the fact that I've received collection notices for 12 years leads me to believe that the debt is stale and not eligible for reporting to credit bureaus nor can it be successfully litigated due to tolling of the statute of limitations in my state.. I believe that since they are the original creditor they don't have to heed my cease communication demand. Fine: They're welcome to soft me for eternity and send me absurd offers...just as long as they don't put anything on my reports. (Thus why I continue to reply to each of their mail communications). Frankly, I hope they enjoy seeing how much debt gets paid off and that they will never see a dime.. I have Amex cards with Citi and BofA and scores in the mid 700s...I don't need them... |

Why jump thru all the hoops for a chance at getting back in which.
One of the worst credit companies I've seen in recent times?. Amex was the bomb.. I get that. My scores never allowed me to. Get an Amex, so I honestly dont know what all the hooha is about.. I can say, I'll likely never app for Amex just by how they've treated people. Here and on other forums. I know thats a limited subset and some people. Have been treated well, but the randomness of their AAs makes me want to puke.. I sincerely hope people that like and use Amex have good experiences with them,. But from all that I've read about them, I think I'll give their hubris a pass.. Good luck in whatever you decide OP.... |

Lol...sounds like being in a relationship with a sociopath / narcissist ... Once you've been in a relationship with them and slighted them in some way, they kick you to the curb, blacklist you, but keep you in their black book for future booty calls or in this case "milk money". Once you've been in a relationship with one, it's never over. Amex wants you to crawl back, dangle the possibility of another relationship, coax you to pay based on this possibility and then laugh all the way to the bank when they deny you some of that Amex love. lol.... Definitely an ego thing breeze.
The future is UNIONS!!!! Rage against the Machine people! lol!.. |

Well, the only advantage for me to get back in w/amex is if they would backdate the tradeline. Due to majorly mishandling credit the first time I got ccs in the mid-late 90s (I burned everyone under the sun- Amex, BA, Citibank, HSBC, etc.), I pretty much have NO €œold€? positive tls on my report except for 1 auto loan from 1997 (set to drop off soon). I let the baddies age off, disputed some, etc. There are a few left that I€™m working on..
Outside of the 1997 auto loan, there€™s a HUGE gap in positive tls b/c I lived w/o ccs for years b/c I couldn€™t get any (not even a secured cc). My next positive tls don€™t start until 2007-2008. While I€™ve made great credit progress, my thinking is if amex would backdate my TL to 1992-1993 when I first got it, that would up my ficos + maybe help me get €œreal€? CLs (I€™m still stuck in the 500-1100 CL range blah).. However, I€™m not paying (with Discover card) amex 100% of what they claim I owe + since this letter made NO offer of any cc, they can suck it + soft me until the cows come home... |

If you call them and specifically tell them you will pay only if offered Oasis, they will mail you an offer..
Still, consider that even if they backdate the TL to 2,000 B.C., they can still pull the rug out from under you at any time and for any reason.. I wonder what would happen if you wrote a letter to the CEO of AmEx and told him that you would consider Oasis only if they agreeded never to screw with you again for any reason other than you defaulting under the new Oasis card... |
