@OP.

They said 6 months based on spending patterns and then consideration for an increase?.

I've had a card (albeit Blue Cash, not charge) with them for 15 months now. I push at least 1500 through it a month and have yet to see any increase on my 3K limit..

However it has.

Never.

Been declined in spite of my very random spending pattern. (Geographically speaking)..

Actually they said the limit would be based on what I spend in the first 6 months. So if I want it increased I would have to spend more and make multiple payments each month so that they have a higher basis for setting the limit. I didn't entirely understand. It sounded like she was reading from a script and very defensive.....

Honest question.. Why does anyone even want an Amex card?.

Outside of this board the stigma attached to them is very positive. Slap down an Amex card overseas with a potential client (or date) and see the reaction...

It's not the fact that they set a limit that bugs me, it's the attitude they take when we call. The recording, everything. It feels like talking to a collection agency. They act defensive and they really don't seem knowledgable. It's like they give canned answers to every question. Even when we called before we applied it was like talking to a FAQ page...

I love AMEX but would never pay them a dime in Annual Fees, either for a personal or business card. If you've got good credit and substantial income, you should be able to pick up a Blue Cash Card from them with a monthly limit of $25K........ If not, then use your other high limit cards..

Good Luck,..

I must be dealing with a different company when I call Discover Card than the rest of you guys. Nothing but stellar experiences with calling in and never a problem with my completely random lifestyle. I posted a thread awhile back about a 21 hour turn-around when I requested a new card right around Christmas..

Just so we're on the same page maybe try calling 1-888-258-3741..

As far as I know my bank (Old National) doesn't limit the amount of payments you can push from it monthly. Perhaps 1K a day limited to the amount of days in a month, but in the world I live in there are more than 25 days in any given month...

Paying (with Discover card) with a Discover card should be a simple, stress-free transaction. If I have to worry about my purchase being approved......every time, it's not doing me any good. I'd much rather have a card that I know has $xx credit limit and I can use up to that amount without fear or worry..

I've always thought of AMEX as the cream of the crop, but not anymore. I really don't understand the need for an AMEX card over any other card out there...

Why dont you make a paypal account, and then "buy" a product for $2000 from yourself with your amex card? that way youll get the $2000 cash back, develop a history of high charged payments, and then not be humiliated when the card is declined? test charges work too, but theyre not guaranteed..

The Charge Cards are very different from the Credit Cards in terms of how flexible Amex is. Just use the card like you want to use it. They will either get with the program, allow you to submit the proper documents to get it up where it needs to be for your business, or they won't do anything but remind you to make multiple payments and you know to move on..

There's no sense playing games. I can't believe the lengths people go to to try and outsmart Amex (Starbucks for first purchase, no Wal-Mart, etc.)..

I loved my Amex's. But they aren't so absolutely amazing you should be altering your life and habits to suit them. The card is supposed to work for you..

I *never* had a problem with them. I charged anything and everything anyplace and everyplace seedy or not. A few times they asked me to call in to "update my profile" (salary, etc.). I sent in tax returns for one of my business accounts. They let me run obscene amounts through my cards..

If they started capping me at 1-2 transactions before I needed to make a payment or if I needed to consider "will Amex not like this type of charge" before using my card at Wal-Mart, they would have been gone and I would have found someone else to deal with..

The whole point of paying (with Discover card) the large annual fee was to avoid having to think, not add more things to worry about..

If you have a business that has $25,000 a month in charge volume and Amex doesn't treat you well, someone else will. But I urge you to give them a chance. If you have documentation to back up your request, they can be very accommodating...

I have a diff experience with them. One rep spent the time and found and applied a MR bonus offer that was 2x the amt of my initial offer; another rep without my request offered to test a charge amt for a potential purchase; another rep told me to not accept the pre-approved plat card upgrade offer because my gold card was still under the waived fee and it made no sense in his opinion to upgrade and pay the $450 fee..

I have had a gold card (personal) for several months now. I use it everywhere and have never had a problem with it and run about 1500-1800 a month through it. Yesterday, I charged one way airline tickets from Rome to home (we are going on a transatlantic cruise), the travel agency's fraud department called and said that they just needed to verify that I made the purchases because it was a flight originating from outside the U.S.A. and Amex wanted verification. It took about ten seconds and the charge (a little under $2500) went through and tickets were issued..

I'm very happy with Amex, I love the extended warranty protection and the other services. I agree with everyone else. I think that if you just use the card as you normally would, they will get a spending profile on you as well as a payment profile. Once they see you spend and pay consistently, you probably will not have to worry about the amount you run through the card...

I have had a personal Amex card since 1986. Gold card upgrade from green soon after this. I have used this card all over the world. Sometimes I would have charges up to $6 grand on it, then some times a whole year with intermittent charges, mostly travel or the holidays for much smaller amountsI've used the sign and travel to put charges into, and paid them off on my time..

I've never had a problem in 24 years. In fact they sent me a letter probably 3 years ago telling me what a pleasure it was ( or some bull) to have me as a longtime customer..

Never a problem on the phone. Ever..

I'm sorry to hear the horror stories on this thread..

Do you think the reason that I haven't experienced this is because of payments every month on time for 24 years whether they be $6K or $30 bucks?.

Whats the deal with people not wanting to use this card at Walmart or Target? Whats up with that profiling? Is this true?..

I sure wouldn't use my card at a.

BOOZE STORE.

On a daily basis....

BUT YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF IF YOU SHOULD USE or NOT USE THE CARD AT THIS SPECIFIC BUSINESS BECAUSE THE Discover card COMPANY WON'T LIKE THE "NAME" OF THE BUSINESS.

On the other-hand what if that "BOOZE STORE" was the closest place to buy anything for 20 miles and they sold SNACKS and PEPSI and COKE and MILK and BREAD and EGGS (on a limited basis)....

Why would that surprise you in the economic climate we are in, Banks are Lying they are scheming, rate-jacking etc. And that's their right too do, so they lied to you....you have a choice though cancel the card and move on........... their are other business cards out there as Amex isn't the only game in town. Your other option is to suck it up and establish the history that they want to see and you will see your limit increase substantially like myself and others have gone through..

I started at a base ceiling of.

$3,500.

Now my ceiling is well over.

100k.

This was six years ago, They want to see history.......if you aren't willing to give them that..... then just close up shop because you won't be seeing any increase till they see what they want to see. I'm sorry I have to be so blunt but I don't believe in beating around the bush..

The thing is NONE of these things are new Amex has been doing this for years...
